Moody

Personal Author:

Bennett, David

Title:

D.L. Moody:  Men of Faith Series / by David Bennett

Publication info:

Minneapolis MN:  Bethany House Publishers, c1989

Summary:

The awkward country boy with a grade-school education who became one of the church’s greatest evangelists!

D. L. Moody was a successful business man whose ministry to men on the rough streets of Chicago in the late 1850′s eventually opened the way to his becoming one of America’s greatest evangelists. Enlisting Ira Sankey as his gifted musical associate, Moody spent two years touring the British Isles, and attendance at their meetings reached into the millions. Returning to the States, the two men took their gospel message to the cities of America with great success. Without radio or television, over 100 million people were influenced by his ministry.

Moody founded three schools that continue to thrive today, although he was without higher education himself. And without the benefit of theological training, he reshaped Victorian Christianity and was responsible for two Christian publishing companies.

Getting excited about books is contagious, and so is the reading habit. The whole family needs all the encouragement it can get, especially teenagers. Read for Your Life is more than inspiration to read. Gladys Hunt discusses how to read a book, what makes a good book, what questions to ask, and how to discern between good, better, and best. She has a way of making you want to read, while helping you to make the most of the opportunity. To help you choose what to read, Barbara Hampton has reviewed more than 300 books. Her recommendations run the gamut from classics like A Tale of Two Cities to contemporary fiction like A Ring of Endless Light; from literary greats like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Alan Paton to moderns like Katherine Paterson and Chaim Potok. The book contains – Pointers on becoming a more perceptive reader – Tips on how to enjoy poetry, fantasy, and fiction – An annotated list of over 300 book recommendations – Hundreds of plot synopses – A complete index to authors and titles.

Faber – How to talk so kids can learn at home and in school

Faber

Personal Author:

Title:

How to talk so kids can learn– at home and in school : what every parent and teacher needs to know / Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish … [et al.].

Publication info:

New York : Simon & Schuster, 1996, c1995.

Physical description:

272 p. ; 22 cm.

General Note:

“A Fireside book.”

Summary:

Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish developed this book in response to constant requests to adapt the unique communications strategies that hallmark their books, lectures, and audio-visual workshops to specific concerns of the classroom. To do so, they teamed up with two award-winning teachers who well know the problems of our faltering school system. This book utilizes the dramatically effective “dialogue” technique (what to say and how and when to say it) that has made Faber and Mazlish’s work famous worldwide. It also features engaging “right and wrong” cartoons that show how to handle typical learning situations so kids will be inspired to do their best. Each chapter includes questions and answers and stories from parents and teachers that illustrate how both have successfully used this method to help kids handle the schoolwork, behavioral, and peer problems that interfere with learning. In every chapter there is a one-page “quick reminder” that sums up that chapter’s salient points for speedy reference.
